Following the announcement of the release of self driving vehicles to curb several human related driving errors, Honda has already begun testing its autonomous connected vehicle technology at Concord Naval Weapons Station in the San Francisco Area. Honda is using the GoMentum Station test bed site according to the terms of the agreement made between them and Contra Costa Transportation Authority to advance on its technology.
Honda is planning to make the Contra Costa County the new technology testing center. The GoMentum station sits on a 5000-acre land is becoming the largest and safest test bed of this kind. The Concord Naval Weapons Station was shut down in
2007 to kick off the conversion process to concord city. The station has its 20 miles paved with city like roadway grids, urban infrastructure and buildings. This setting is suitable to be converted into an environment that can accelerate the development of this new vehicle technology.Honda Technology |
The Honda Company will leverage development and testing at the station for a more modified version of the Acura flagship RXL sedan. The new Honda cars are going to adopt new sensors and cameras that will operate hand in hand with immense arrays of reverse, forward and corners to enable correct AcuraWatch safety on production of RXL. The extensive arrays are also going to assist in driving technology.
Research has already showed that concord naval weapons stations provide the best grounds for Honda's technology testing. This is because it has controlled a more controlled environment which can be modified to suit any range of settings. A testing will navigate through different environment especially the urban settings. Honda is going to rise to a new level of robustness and become a leading industry in this new innovative technology.
Mercedes and Google are the other vehicle manufacturers in California that have been in the testing of new technologies. Due to the competition, Honda plans to open another facility in Michigan at university of Michigan mobility transformation center. This is going to complement the north California efforts on getting those cars on the roads. Honda is not bringing us a completely strange model, it modifies the Acura RLX model to a more special version by fitting sensors and cameras for controlling without a driver. Audi is doing this same thing with its A7 model.
The company recently announced that the vehicles are not going to hit the roads any day soon before 2030.
